How to Recover a Lost Bitcoin Multisig Key with Evoke

If you've lost one of your personal keys and need to use Evoke's recovery key, here's what to expect. This process is thorough by design as it protects you against social engineering attacks.

The recovery process

1. Contact Evoke support. Let us know you've lost a key and need recovery assistance. We'll begin our identity verification process.
2. Verify your identity. For security, we'll confirm your identity through multiple factors before proceeding. This typically includes verifying personal information, security questions, and potentially a video call.
3. Prepare a new vault. Before moving funds, set up a new multisig vault with fresh keys. This ensures you'll have full 2-of-3 protection again after recovery.
4. Co-sign the recovery transaction. Using your remaining personal key and Evoke's recovery key, we'll co-sign a transaction moving your funds to your new vault.
5. Confirm and secure. Once the transaction confirms on the Bitcoin network, your funds are in your new vault. Store your new seed phrases securely in separate locations.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery is not instant. Depending on how quickly you can complete identity verification and the complexity of your situation, the full process typically takes 2–7 business days. Our identity verification process is thorough by design — this protects you if an attacker tried to impersonate you and request recovery.

Can someone force recovery? No. Evoke's recovery key requires both identity verification and your remaining key's signature. An attacker cannot force us to sign a transaction alone. Learn more about our non-custodial architecture.
